The 300 SL Coupé (1954–1957)—the legendary gull-wing coupé, which was the first pure-bred sports car developed by Daimler-Benz after the war and is now being brought back to life as a miniature plastic toy model. The coupé has been recreated with the utmost attention to detail based on the original CAD data and is available for the first time on a 1:18 scale for the Playmobil world and its figures. The faithful reproduction extends from the exterior to the interior: for example, the model features the number 54 printed on the hood and both gull-wing doors, symbolizing the first year of production, 1954. The gull-wing doors and the trunk can be opened. The Playmobil set consists of a total of 46 pieces, including two figures, a toolbox with tools, a timeline, a race flag, and a display stand with vehicle specifications. It comes in Playmobil packaging featuring the Mercedes-Benz Classic star. By the way: The development of the car was initiated by Max Hoffman, who had served as the official importer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 1952. With the goal of opening up the U.S. market for Daimler-Benz, the development of two sports car models finally got underway in September 1953. The 300 SL was unveiled in February 1954 at the “International Motor Sports Show” in New York and was based on the 1952 racing car. It also inherited what is arguably its most striking feature: the famous gull-wing doors. However, these were not conceived solely for design purposes but were primarily driven by engineering considerations. From August 1954 to May 1957, 1,400 units of the coupé were produced in Sindelfingen, including 29 with aluminum bodies and one prototype with a plastic body.
